The 6 Key Measurements for Wigs

Different wig caps fit differently, so it’s best to take all six standard measurements:

  1. Circumference

    • Place the tape at your natural hairline in the middle of your forehead.

    • Run it behind your ear, down to the nape of your neck, around the other ear, and back to the starting point.

    • This is the most important measurement for wig size.

  2. Front to Nape

    • Place the tape at your front hairline.

    • Run it over the top of your head, down to the nape of your neck at the lowest point.

  3. Ear to Ear (Across Forehead)

    • Start at the top edge of one ear.

    • Run the tape across your forehead to the same point on the opposite ear.

  4. Ear to Ear (Over Top of Head)

    • Place the tape at the top edge of one ear.

    • Run it across the crown of your head to the top edge of the opposite ear.

  5. Temple to Temple (Around Back)

    • Place the tape at your temple (beside one eyebrow).

    • Run it around the back of your head, touching the widest point at the back, and end at the opposite temple.

  6. Nape of Neck

    • Measure the width of your neck’s hairline from one side to the other at the lowest point.

Wig Size Chart (Approximate)

  • Petite: 20–21 inches circumference

  • Average: 21.5–22.5 inches circumference

  • Large: 23–24 inches circumference

(Most women fall into the “average” size category.)

Tip: Take each measurement twice for accuracy. If you’re between sizes, it’s usually safer to go a little larger since wigs can be adjusted with straps.

Some Tips about How to Measure Your Head for a Wig

1. Before measuring your head size for a wig, you had better remove any hairstyles that may affect the measurement. When you measure the head circumference, there are some hairstyles that will add some volume, thus influencing the data of measurement, such as braids, buns, ponytails, and so on.

2. If it is possible, you had better remove some accessories that will affect your measurements, for example, pins, clips, barrettes, and so on;

3. In order to get an accurate measurement, it would be better to use a flexible, non-stretchable tape for you to measure your head.

4. It is important to consider your body frame and the volume of your natural hair when choosing the size of your wig.

If you are petite and have thick and medium-length hair, you may choose a small size. While you have thick and long hair, you had better go up a size;

You can go with a medium size if you have thick, medium-length hair and a medium body shape.  Additionally, please go up a size if your hair is long and thick.  Please choose a lesser size if your hair is thin or nonexistent.

You might choose a large size if you have medium-length hair, a large body, and a head circumference greater than 22.5 inches.  Please go down a size if your hair is thin or nonexistent.
