How to Wash & Care for Your Human Hair Wig

Human hair wigs are prized for their natural look and versatility. Once you’ve invested in a human hair wig, it’s important to know how to properly take care of it to maintain its quality and longevity. Here’s a comprehensive guide on how to wash and care for your wig to ensure it stays looking beautiful and lasts longer.

How to wash your wig?

1. Detangle your wig: Before washing your wig, wet the hair, apply conditioner and carefully detangle it from the bottom to the top using a wig brush or a wide-tooth comb like the Sterlyhair hairbrush. This step helps eliminate knots and tangles before washing. Avoid brushing while shampooing or conditioning, as wet brushing can damage the fibers.

2. Run warm water over the hair: Begin by placing your wig under lukewarm water, ideally using a sink tap for convenience with all your products nearby. As you soak your human hair wig, ensure the water flows in the same direction as the wig hairs to maintain its tangle-free condition throughout the process.

3. Shampoo your wig: After soaking your wig, apply a generous amount of wig shampoo to the crown. Using your fingers, gently distribute the shampoo from the top of the wig down to the ends. Handle the wig delicately and refrain from scrubbing or harshly rubbing the product into the fibers.

4. Rinse away the shampoo: Rinse the shampoo out of the wig by gently running it under the tap. Make sure that the water flows in the same direction as the hair lies. The running water effectively removes most of the product, and you can aid the process by gently combing your fingers through the wig while it's under the tap.

5. Condition your wig: Next up is conditioning. Apply your wig conditioner to the crown of the wig and gently distribute it through the hair, ensuring even coverage without concentrating the product in one spot.

6. Repeat the shampoo and rinse process again.

7. Dry your wig: Ensuring your human hair wig dries properly is essential for maintaining its appearance and durability. The drying method you choose can significantly impact the wig's overall health and prevent unnecessary damage.

a. Air drying: The gentlest method to dry your wig. Place your wig on a wig stand or mannequin head and allow it to dry naturally. This method preserves the wig's natural texture and prevents heat-related damage.

b. Blow drying: If you're short on time, you can use a blow dryer to accelerate drying. Use a low heat setting and keep the dryer at least 10-12 inches away from the wig to prevent overheating the hair fibers. This ensures your wig dries quickly without compromising its quality.

How often should you wash your human hair wig?

We recommend washing your human hair wig every 3- 5 wears or when it starts to look dull or feel weighed down.
